Christians Praying Together
STIRRING THE POT
Christians Praying Together
Every Christian believes in the concept of prayer. Many Christians believe in some form of public prayer and some form of intercessory prayer. Thus most Christians believe Christians should pray together. The controversy (stirring of the pot) would be in regard to Christians praying together from various denominations/non-denomination churches. Praying with someone who does not have the exact same doctrinal beliefs.
We are not talking about differences in the essentials of Christian doctrine. If a person does not believe in the essentials of Christian doctrine, then they are either not a Christian or a babe in Christ that has become truly born again but does not know what the Bible teaches.
Essentials
Some of the essentials of the faith are:
Deity of Christ
Jesus is the only means of salvation
The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus
Salvation by faith alone
Monotheism
Holy Trinity
Authority of Scripture
Return of Christ
Question
If you are a born again follower of Jesus Christ can you/do you pray with other Christ followers?
Can you/do you pray with Christians of various denominations/non-denominations? Or do they have to be part of ‘your group’?
Can you be united in prayer with other Christians? Or do you see unity as being conformity? If you are Southern Baptist do you go as far as saying they have to be Southern Baptist, not just Baptist to pray with them? When you refuse to join with someone of a Charismatic background? If so, you do not believe in unity in the faith. You believe in unity by conformity. You are making the non-essentials to be essentials in order to unite in prayer.
Move of God/Revival Quenched
There will be no true move of God in our churches, in our communities, in our nation if followers of Christ are stuck on ‘you must be and think like me’ for me to unite with you in prayer because it brings division among the Body of Christ. I would go as far as to say it reflects the character of Satan-pride. It reflects a mindset of “our group has all truth” and thus we cannot unite with you. This mindset grieves and quenches the Holy Spirit.
Take a Stand
If truly born again Charismatics and Baptists, Presbyterians and Methodists, Lutherans and Nazarenes, etc cannot unite to pray for souls and revival, that is certainly is evidence of the need for prayer. Someone(s) have to break out of the mold. Someone has to say “Enough Already! It is time for the Body of Christ to stand as one for the Gospel. It is time for us to maintain our uniqueness while at the same time not letting our uniqueness not stop us from Intercessory Prayer for the sake of the Gospel.”
Soup is better when you stir the pot. Stirring the pot may not be popular among some Christians, but it is necessary.
