Blind Faith-The Truth

Blind Faith. how many times as a Christian or even as a non-Christian we are told to walk in blind faith? We are to trust God with blind faith. You need to accept Jesus in blind faith?

Many times Christians will combine trusting God with blind faith. You just need to trust God with blind faith.

To be blind means not to see. What if I was to say God wants us to see. The response to that statement could be “what is it that God wants us to see?” What if I was to say that God wants us to have a tangible faith, not just blind faith? What if I was to say that the phrase blind faith gets twisted and can even go as far as excusing, justifying, or at a minimum winking at evil? Bottom line what is the truth about blind faith.

In this series of podcasts I will be addressing the following topics:
Does God want us to be people of blind faith? The biblical perspective of walking in faith. The hypocrisy of those who demand blind faith. The harm that can come from blind faith (which some translate into blind trust). My personal walk of faith from atheist to sold out Christian.

Key Bible Verse used regarding Blind Faith

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NASB)
for we walk by faith, not by sight

The more accurate translation would be for we walk by faith, not by what we see or by appearance.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (AMP)
for we walk by faith, not by sight [living our lives in a manner consistent with our confident belief in God’s promises]

It should be noted the verse in context is specifically in regard to the temporal and the eternal, in regard to heaven (which we cannot see) and here on earth (which we can see). Walking by faith, not sight can certainly be a principle applied to our walk in Christ.

Does God Want Us to Walk in Blind Faith?

The answer is yes and no. We all have heard multitudes of times “Just trust Him”. This certainly can sound like blind faith. But is it? We will get to the answer in a moment. But lets look more at the concept of faith and how God works.

Based upon 2 Corinthians 5:7 and several other Bible verses we will look at later we certainly should walk in faith. The question is faith in what/whom, and is there a difference between faith and blind faith? Does walking in faith translate to blind trust?

When we look at biblical principles we will see in Scripture God certainly wants us to walk in faith in Him and to trust Him by faith. However, is it blind faith? Is it mindless faith? Is it faith we stir up or that He instills in us?

Blind Faith is the unquestioning belief or trust in something or someone without requiring evidence, reasoning, or critical examination. The connotation is it is a faith based upon a lack of knowledge, one might say faith based upon ignorance. Is that the kind of faith God wants us to have? I say no based upon His character, His Word the Bible, the fact that it is God who instills faith in us, that He gives each of us a measure of faith, and the revelations/evidences He gives us rather we understand them to be from Him or not.

Hebrews 11:1 AMP
Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses].
Notice the phrase ‘conviction of their reality’ and ‘comprehends as fact that what cannot be experienced by physical senses’. Conviction? Where does it come from? Physical senses, no. What about a spiritual sense?

God’s Character

God is a rational being, He is not irrational. To be irrational is to be illogical and unreasonable. That violates His character. God certainly does not call us to be irrational, illogical, or unreasonable. In the natural it may seem at times God’s ways are arbitrary, unreasonable, and do not make sense. But the more we come to an understanding of Him, the more we read His Word, it becomes more and more clear, our Heavenly Father is far from irrational and arbitrary.

If we are to be like Jesus, and Jesus is a reflection of, and is God, then would Father God call us to be irrational, illogical, unreasonable, foolish? Is there not some substance to our faith besides blind faith? Let’s continue to explore.

The Word of God

If one reads the Bible with an open heart, with sincerity, with an inquisitive spirit, with a reasoning spirit, looking at all the evidence, it will certainly build faith within you. The Spirit of God will give you revelation. clarity, discernment, faith. God will open your spiritual eyes. God will instill faith in you, not blind faith, but faith that comes from His Spirit.

Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB
⁸ For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; ⁹ not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
The grace God gives to be saved is by faith, not works. And the faith we have has been given to us by God. It is a gift. We could not have faith unless He instilled it upon us.

According to God’s Word we each are given a measure of faith. Thus, faith is a gift that comes from God.
Romans 12:3
For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

Faith comes from reading the Word of God, hearing the Word of God and comes from the Spirit of God. It is not just blind faith. If we are called by God to salvation He has given us a measure of faith.

If someone is lacking faith, what do we suggest they do, spend more time in the Word of God, it will build their faith.

Coincidences/Experiences/Revelations

It is time to get honest, even with those who do not have faith to believe in a God-those who say Christians are just ignorant fools that believe in a fairytale.

Coincidences/Experiences
A popular saying is coincidences are just God working but not given credit for what He is doing. Of course, it just sounds silly to an atheist or an agnostic. But this get real. There are multitudes that have had too many ‘coincidences’ to chalk them up as just being random events. In fact, it could be foolish, ignorant, illogical, irrational, unreasonable if one has had many circumstances, situations, experiences and to chalk them up to just coincidences. Especially if one looks to the odds of them occurring like they have occurred. There are many who have come to faith in a God, in a personal God, not by blind faith but by the evidence, by reasoning, by critical examination. That is not blind faith.

Revelation
There are times God gives a revelation of who He is to someone. That can be by visions or dreams. It can be revelation through the conviction that the Bible must be true based upon the evidence. So, what we are saying is that God gives a revelation of Who He is, or a revelation about His Word, the Bible, that brings conviction. Going back to Hebrews 11:1 it says faith is the evidence (conviction) of things not seen (physically but seen, understood spiritually).

Atheists and Agnostics

Another get real moment to those who identify as atheist or agnostic. If there has been many ‘coincidences’/experiences in your life that seem to point to a god, a personal god, and you just ignore them, and you have some revelations of the potential there is a personal god, and you just ignore them, you are operating in blind faith that there is no god. What you are doing is operating in lack of knowledge and ignorance by choice, not based upon the evidence presented to you by God Himself. You are operating with unquestioning belief and trust in God not existing because you are ignoring the evidence, not using logical reasoning, or critical examination. Again, tough words, but you are operating out of chosen ignorance. You do not have rational faith because you have rejected it. God will not give you something you reject. Faith is a gift. If you do not want it, it will not be given to you. You cannot blame God. The one to blame is you. You are operating in irrational blind faith that God does not exist.

Summary

God absolutely calls us to walk in faith. We will see that more in our next podcast. He does not call us to walk in blind faith in the sense of how it is normally defined. God will use ‘Coincidences’, Circumstances, Experiences, Revelation to instill faith in us. Faith is a gift from God. We must choose if we want to receive it or not. If we want to reject it, we can. We can have a blind faith to not believe in the existence of God, it is a foolish blind faith because it is illogical, irrational, and ignores the evidence that God presents that He is real, and not only real, but a personal God.
