Blind Faith-The Word of God

Before we get into this podcast, let’s look once again at the description of blind faith:
Blind Faith is the unquestioning belief or trust in something or someone without requiring evidence, reasoning, or critical examination. The connotation is it is a faith based upon a lack of knowledge, one might say faith based upon ignorance.
In our previous article/podcast we ultimately stated that God does not call us to blind faith, based upon many factors. If God does not call us to walk in blind faith, would He call us to walk in blind trust. The answer is no. In this article we are going to take a look at Scripture and biblical principles regarding faith.

2 Corinthians 5:7

for we walk by faith, not by sight (NASB)

for we walk by faith, not by sight [living our lives in a manner consistent with our confident belief in God’s promises]

The sight it is talking about is physical sight. We are not to live by what we can physically see with our eyes. But what about for we walk by faith through our spiritual eyes? We walk by the faith that God instills upon us.

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (NASB)
Assurance can be replaced with substance, reality, confidence. Hoped for can be replaced with expected. Conviction can be replaced with evidence, proof, be certain.
Now faith is the substance/reality of things expected, the proof of things not seen.

Things not seen can be replaced with things not seen in the physical sense. Can we know things in a spiritual sense? Any true follower of Christ has had spiritual experiences where God has revealed Himself to them.

Ephesians 2:8-9

⁸ For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; ⁹ not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. (NASB)
Salvation is a free gift obtained by grace. The grace is obtained by faith. The faith ultimately comes from God. It is not our blind faith that brings salvation, it is the faith God instills us, not blind faith.

Romans 12:3

Romans 12:3
For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. (NASB)

God gives us faith. He may give us a minimal amount of faith or great faith, but enough faith to believe in and trust Him, not blind faith.

Romans 10:17

So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ. (AMP)

When the Word is preached and when a person hears the Word, faith can come upon them.

Genesis 15:6

Then Abram believed in (affirmed, trusted in, relied on, remained steadfast to) the Lord; and He counted (credited) it to him as righteousness (doing right in regard to God and man). (AMP)
The context is the Lord shows up to Abram in a vision. His faith was not blind faith.

2 Thessalonians 1:3

We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater; (NASB)
We grow in faith. The more we see God at work, the more faith we have. It is not blind faith.

Romans 1:12

that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine. (NASB)
Our faith grows by us seeing others walking in faith. It is not blind faith.

The Israelites

The Israelites during their journey in the wilderness certainly had doubt and unbelief at times, but God over and over again did signs and wonders to reveal Himself. They did not just have blind faith.

God’s Hand in Our Faith

It is clear through Scripture that God has His Hand in our faith. Us having faith is based upon us cooperating with His Holy Spirit working in our life. As we watch God work in our life, as we cooperate with God, as we see God work in the lives of others, our faith grows.

Trust in God

If we walk in the faith God gives us, it becomes easy to trust God. It is not a blind trust. It is a trust based upon the evidence that God is trustworthy. It is a trust knowing that the Sovereign Lord, Father God, knows best. Does it become a blind trust? Yes and no. No in the sense that we have seen that God is trustworthy. It is a blind trust in the sense that new situations, circumstances, trials, tribulations will come our way and at the moment we do not know what the end result is going to be. We cannot see with our eyes the future. We cannot see with our eyes how God is going to make Romans 8:28 to come to past.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. (NASB)

Blind Faith and Trust

There certainly is a blind faith and trust in regard to there are multitudes of things we cannot see with our physical eyes, especially anything in the future. But God has a way of bringing hope in the midst of hopeless situations. The hope instills faith in us. Is it a mystery? Yes! God’s ways are bigger than ours. But we learn to cherish the mystery because God is behind the mystery. So, if you want to call this blind faith and blind trust, go for it. But it certainly is not based upon illogical, irrational, foolish thinking.

Romans 5:3-5 (NASB)
³ And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; ⁴ and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; ⁵ and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

When we encounter various trials and persevere through them it builds character. In the midst of this journey hope is built because we have seen God come through over and over again. We see the hand of God in our life, we have seen and experienced his love. All of this builds faith within us. Faith to believe we can trust God with our life.

Reminder

We do not have to have large faith, big faith. We just need more faith than doubt. One mustard seed of faith than doubt even if it is ‘blind faith’ will end up revealing God is trustworthy.

Summary

When we start a faith journey with God, we may have very little faith. Much of it is blind faith in the sense we may not physically have evidence God is at work, but we have a spiritual sense that there is substance to our faith. Plus, for most of us we have seen God work in ‘coincidences’, circumstances, situations, so it is not blind faith with absolutely no evidence.

The Scriptures make it clear that any faith we have comes from God. The faith we have is instilled upon us by God. We have seen God work in us and in others. This faith makes it easier to trust in God by faith even if we have no proof He is trustworthy for a specific situation. But again, anybody who has been a Christian for any length of time has evidence that God is trustworthy. God will certainly take us on journeys of what may seem as blind faith and blind trust. We cannot see with our eyes but we can know within our heart we can trust Him. Our faith may not be strong, at times we may not have faith, but God will give us the portion of faith we need if we ask Him.
