Women and Ministry, Part Two
In my previous article titled Complementarianism, Egalitarianism, AND? I mentioned that in regards to
Women in Ministry (Evangelizing, Preaching, Teaching) that there are two main camps: Complementarianism and Egalitarianism. Complementarianism basically believes women cannot evangelize, preach, or teach from the pulpit, or teach men. Egalitarianism basically believes women can evangelize, preach, teach from anywhere, and can teach men, without exceptions. I stated I believe there is another position on this topic and I named it Isorropíaism.
Isorropíaism
Isorropíaism is not a real word. I am playing off the Greek word Isorropía which translates to ‘balance’ in English. I believe if one lets Scripture interpret Scripture, if biblical/historical/culture context is taken seriously, there is a balance between the ‘extremes’ of Complementarianism and Egalitarianism. Yes I am calling these two camps extreme because each ignores Bible verses that do not support their camp, or twists them to support their doctrinal belief.
If we want to know the heart of God regarding women and ministry we need to have a non-bias mindset. We need to let Scripture lead us to truth, not decide what truth is and then find Scripture to back up that truth.
GRAY
There are truths, there is doctrine, there are Scriptures that are black and white. There is no room for gray. Scripture makes it clear there is no gray. For example, salvation is by faith alone, the only means of salvation is Jesus being Lord and Savior, the deity of Christ, etc.
There are topics/beliefs/scripture/doctrine that is not as black and white as some what it to be. That is one main reason why there are different denominations. Why there are varying doctrinal positions like Calvinism/Arminianism, Pre-Trib/Mid-Trib/Post-Trib, End Time Chronology. That is why there is disagreement over women and ministry regarding women evangelizing/preaching/teaching in the pulpit, or teaching men.
BALANCE
Just maybe there are truths on both sides of some of these topics, maybe we are missing some of them because we are so set on dogma, traditions of men, denominationalism. Maybe as Christ Followers we need to delve deeper into Scripture ourselves and see if there is something we are missing. Just maybe we need to find the balance between various doctrines. In regard to Women in Ministry are there truths on both sides of the issue and we are missing them because we have blinders on. Our dogma is more important than truth. Just maybe we need to find Isorropía-balance.
In this series we are going to look at all the ‘controversial Scriptures’ on Women in Ministry with the goal to find the Truth. Just maybe the truth is balanced truth, not extremes.
CAUTION
Something to think about. The God of the Universe, the Author of Scripture, if we are honest, has chosen to not make some things in Scripture as clear and concise as we would like. Let’s Get Real. There are Biblical Scholars who spend their lifetime reading Greek and Hebrew, studying historical/cultural context and they cannot agree on certain ‘non-essential’ doctrine. Should we as the body of Christ refuse to have fellowship and work together with other Christians to win souls because we disagree on the role of women in ministry. Should we not ask if people are being won to Christ, are lives being transformed? If one decides to not be in fellowship to spread the Gospel because of disagreeing over the role of women in ministry, I would say that they are doing exactly what Satan would like them to do.
One can stand, and should stand on their convictions, and not bend on the essential doctrines of Christianity. Sorry, but the role of women in ministry is not an essential doctrine of Christianity. It may be an essential doctrine of a denomination. Rather your background is Complementarianism or Egalitarianism, are you willing to explore deeper in the topic if you have not done so in the past? If not, why not?
