The Power of an Altar Call

  • By PreacherRichD

there is hope the power of an altar

God can work, and does work, anywhere, anytime, in any way He wants to work. He is God. But there is power in going to the altar in prayer. In this podcast my friend Bobby shares what happened to him after going to the altar for prayer. His experience ultimately led to him being born again and being set free from alcohol and drug addiction.

How many people are at a church service, God tugs on their heart to go to the altar, and they let pride take control and they do not go to the altar. They leave the church saying, “When I get home I will go before the Lord”, and it never happens. Just maybe if they had gone to the altar their life would be different.

Pew versus Altar
Let’s look at what can be taking place in the pew versus what can be taking place at the altar. Before I speak on the difference I want to make it clear that there are multitudes of people getting born again, recommitting their lives to the Lord, getting healed and delivered wherever the Holy Spirit may be working in their life. God does not need an altar to do His work. But Almighty God does use the altar.

I strongly believe when there is an altar call individuals should respond if the Holy Spirit is tugging on their heart to do so. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Pew-distractions all around you. Altar-less distractions
  2. Pew-You are thinking about yourself and others. Altar- focused on God.
  3. Pew-Voices saying you do not need to go to the altar, just pray, confess, repent when you get home. Altar-you are actually doing the praying, confessing, repenting
  4. Pew-The demonic is seeing your hesitation to go to the altar, giving you all kinds of reasons to not go to the altar. Altar-the demonic sees you are serious to obtain help from God.
  5. Pew-praying by yourself. Altar-others praying for you.
  6. Pew-worried about what people may think. Altar-concerned about being right with God.

I close this podcast with a challenge for all listening and myself. The next time you are at church and the Holy Spirit tugs on your heart to go to the altar, be obedient and see what God does. I can promise you He will honor your actions to obey His tug and your actions to get closer to Him. If nothing whatsoever happens at the altar God Almighty will still honor your faithfulness and fruit will come from your obedience.
