Christian Critical Thinking

Should Christians make decisions based upon facts and the Bible or based upon emotions and feelings? Why do I ask that? Because too many Christians develop opinion, make decisions, and even embrace Bible doctrine based upon other factors than facts and the Bible. Too many Christians form opinions based upon what their pastor may say, the beliefs of their congregation, the political party they belong to, or only based only upon experiences.
Christians need to form opinions make decisions, embrace doctrine based upon the principles of critical thinking than on emotions, feelings, or the opinions of others.
What is Critical Thinking?
Before I go any further, I need to explain what is Critical Thinking:
A critical thinker is someone who actively analyzes, evaluates, and interprets information to make reasoned, informed judgments and decisions.
Critical thinkers try to not make judgments and decisions based upon emotions, feelings, or fads, they do their best to stay with facts, not opinions. Thry look to what is rational, logical, closest to what would be considered truth.
Many times individuals who are critical thinkers are misunderstood and are labeled as being judgmental, condemning, negative, pessimistic. That is not what defines being a critical thinker.
Characteristics of Critical Thinkers:
- Inquisitiveness and curiosity: actively seeking knowledge and understanding
- Open-mindedness: considering different viewpoints and perspectives
- Analytical thinking: breaking down complex information into components
- Systematic reasoning: following logical steps to evaluate evidence
- Persistence in seeking truth: not accepting information at face value
- Self-awareness: recognizing personal biases and assumptions
- Maturity in judgment: making reasoned decisions based on evidence
Benefits of Being a Critical Thinker
1. Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills
Critical thinkers break down complex issues into manageable parts, explore multiple perspectives, and find effective solutions.
2. Better Decision-Making
By weighing evidence, considering alternatives, and avoiding biases, critical thinkers make more accurate and thoughtful choices.
3. Improved Communication
They can express ideas clearly, logically, and persuasively, which strengthens collaboration and reduces misunderstandings.
4. Stronger Creativity
Critical thinking opens the mind to unconventional ideas and innovative solutions by challenging assumptions and seeing problems from new angles.
5. Increased Emotional Intelligence
It fosters self-awareness, empathy, and the ability to navigate interpersonal situations effectively.
6. Greater Self-Awareness
Regularly questioning beliefs and assumptions helps individuals recognize biases, adapt to change, and grow personally.
7. Protection from Harmful Information
In an information-saturated world, critical thinking helps filter out misinformation, avoid scams, and make safer personal and health-related decisions.

Shortcomings of Critical Thinkers
1. Overthinking and Decision Paralysis
Critical thinkers may spend excessive time analyzing every detail, which can delay action or prevent them from acting on intuition when it’s appropriate. This overanalysis can lead to analysis paralysis, where the person is unable to decide because they keep weighing options.
2. Pessimism and Focus on Negatives
An overemphasis on flaws, risks, and weaknesses can create a pessimistic or cynical outlook. This can reduce motivation, stifle creativity, and cause individuals to overlook positive feedback or opportunities.
3. Emotional Detachment
Relying heavily on logic and evidence can make critical thinkers emotionally detached from situations. This may be problematic in contexts where empathy, relationships, or emotional intelligence are as important as facts.
4. Time-Consuming and Stressful
The process of gathering, evaluating, and weighing information can be slow and mentally taxing. In fast-paced environments, this can be a disadvantage, leading to stress or anxiety.
5. Limited Scope of Analysis
Critical thinking is only as good as the information and perspectives available. If the data is incomplete, biased, or flawed, the conclusions drawn will also be limited.
6. Reduced Creativity and Imagination
Excessive scrutiny of ideas can suppress imaginative thinking. Critical thinkers may avoid bold or unconventional solutions because they are too risk-averse.
7. Social and Relational Challenges
A preference for intellectual discussion and self-reliance can make it harder to engage in casual social interactions or build rapport, potentially limiting personal and professional relationships.

Experience and Common Sense
Critical Thinkers will look at their experiences to see if they confirm or conflict with logic, reason, and facts. They cherish the concept of common sense which is defined as sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situations and facts. At times it is challenging for them to be around individuals who seem to not operate out of common sense.
Balance
When looking at the benefits and disadvantages it can be seen at times a benefit may turn into a disadvantage. One of the challenges of Critical Thinkers is to try and find the balance. Thus, for some, maybe many, Critical Thinkers their minds are always busy. At times they can be way too serious. At times they be so concerned about truth that they make it more important than relationships. When adding all these factors it is why Critical Thinkers are not always fun people to be around. It would also explain why many individuals rather make decisions based upon feelings and emotions.
Christian Critical Thinkers and Biblical Standards
A Christian who is a critical thinker is going to compare everything to the Word of God, which they see as the final truth. The Bible is the foundation, the measuring stick. They are going to look at circumstances, situations, incidents, decisions by others and compare them to Scripture. They may have their own emotions, feelings, opinions on an incident but will put them in check compared to the facts and to biblical principles. The Bible becomes the final authority, not them.
Strong Convictions
Critical thinkers, especially Christian Critical Thinkers, have strong convictions. They will live and die for what they believe. It can appear they are hard-headed and argumentative. To an extent they are, but the basis of it is not normally based upon pride or that they do not believe they can be wrong. It is on the basis they have weighed all the facts, trying to stay clear from emotions and personal opinions, and are convinced they are seeing things in a rational, logical way. (Of course, they can be wrong, and are wrong at times.)
Humbleness Required
Because we live in a fallen world, because all of us fall short, because we all miss the mark, because none of us can have all the facts, because there is the reality of life in a fallen world, critical thinkers can be wrong in their assessments, their conclusions. This requires critical thinkers to be humble. Humble enough that if they are wrong in their assessments, their conclusions, they freely acknowledge their error. This is what makes critical thinkers unique. They can come across as prideful because of their strong convictions, but more than willing to acknowledge any errors in judgment if given the facts.
PreacherRichD
I, Richard Dover, can be an extreme Critical Thinker to a fault at times. I have to always check my heart, I have to always remind myself to not make what I see as truth to not become more important than relationship. I always have a battle within me because my personality would be labeled as Choleric and Melancholy which are opposites. So I can be a very logical, rational, person not controlled by emotions while at the same time a person who can be very compassionate, believe in giving second and third chances, and have a passion to help individuals who have made very illogical decisions. I can be cold and distant and turn around and be very empathetic. I believe putting all this together would be one reason some identify me as quirky. If the shoe fits, wear it.
