The Beatitudes-Blessed Are the Merciful-Part One

Matthew 5:7
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Definition of mercy
Greek word Eleos. Signifies compassion, kindness, a deep concern for the suffering of others. To have pity on. An active response to alleviate suffering.
To be merciful is to show forgiveness and compassion to those in need.
Mercy has no conditions attached.
God’s mercy is the withholding of a just punishment; it is His compassion on the miserable.
To summarize God’s mercy toward mankind. We are in rebellion to God, we are headed to eternal punishment in hell. God sends Jesus to take on our sin, to die for our sin and Jesus conquers sin and death through is resurrection and salvation is a free gift.
Notice there is nothing we do deserve or receive mercy. Notice there are no conditions.
Matthew 9:13
Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Titus 3:5 NIV
He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
1 Peter 1:3 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Notice there is nothing we do deserve or receive mercy. Notice there are no conditions.
We Need Mercy
Before we will be willing to show others mercy we need to clearly understand that we need mercy. The more we comprehend our need for mercy, and that the reward for showing mercy is to receive mercy, the more we will be willing to show others mercy.
Showing Others Mercy
We do not show mercy because people deserve mercy. We show mercy because it is the right thing to do and God promises us that as we show mercy we will receive mercy.
But what about not enabling, consequences for wrong behavior, justice? We will talk about that in our next podcast.
