The American Church is consumed with carnality, self-centeredness, a ME mentality, much as a result of Liberal Theology. The extreme “once saved, always saved” mindset contributes to carnality among those who claim to be Christian.

What is Carnality?

Definitions: the quality or state of being flesh; fleshly lust or its indulgence, sensuality; preoccupation with, or indulgence in, the flesh or the body and its passions and appetites; indulgence of the senses, the quality or state of being merely temporal or worldly; lack of spiritual vitality or maturity, wordliness.

It should be clear when you look at the definitions of carnality, it is what the Bible calls lust of the flesh, deeds of darkness, works of the flesh.

Works of the Flesh

Galatians 5:19-21
¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, ²¹ envy,  drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 

Notice Scripture makes it clear that those who have a lifestyle of living in the flesh will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The Unrighteous

1 Corinthians 6

⁹ Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Take note that this list is in regard to those who continually walk in unrighteousness. It’s a lifestyle. Notice vs 11 says Such Were Some Of You.

Liberal Theology

Liberal theology would have you think that God really does not care about individuals walking in the works of the flesh and in unrighteous. It avoids calling these things sin. Within liberal theology all sexual sin is not sin if there is ‘love’ involved. Their definition of love, not the Bible’s definition. For many getting drunk and doing drugs is okay.

Once Saved, Always Saved

There are those in the once saved always saved camp that believe that if a person is chosen by God to be saved, no matter they do or how they live they will have eternal life. They preach sermons that since Jimmy got saved at eight, they were predestined to be saved so it is immaterial what they do, they will be in heaven, just miss out on many rewards. Totally ignoring 1 Cor 6:11 such were some of you.

They will do funerals saying “Yes, Jimmy lived a terrible life and died as a drunkard, but praise God Jimmy accepted Christ at 11 and is not in heaven.” How many hear this message and feel it is okay if they are a carnal Christian. How many are not truly born again and going to hell?

If sin is your Lord, not Jesus, it becomes immaterial how many salvation prayers you have said. Their is no fruit of repentance. One has to question if there is even a such a thing as a carnal Christian.

How many individuals are going to hell because they are either told that their sinful lifestyle does not matter to God because He loves them so much, or that since they said a prayer they are guaranteed a ticket to heaven regardless of how they live.

Based upon the statistics, a majority of those who call themselves Christians are not truly born again. False doctrine is sending people to hell. God will certainly judge those who teach carnality is okay in God’s eyes.

There needs to be a call to get back to the Word of God. That character matters. That how we live matters. That we are called to live a holy life. That Jesus is coming for the Bride of Christ, not a prostituted church that has sold herself to the world.
