The Beatitudes-Blessed Are The Meek

  • By PreacherRichD

blessed are the meek there is hope

My co-host, Bobby the Seeker, and I discussed what is the definition of meekness and the meaning of inheriting the earth. (This podcast was recorded two days after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Bobby and I both believe Charlie Kirk was a great example of a person who reflected meekness in his character, so we mentioned him several times in the pdocast.

Matthew 5:3 ESV

“Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the land.”

As we have said in past articles. the Beatitudes when read with the natural mind do not make sense. They seem contradictory. They do not seem inviting. Who wants to be meek if it means weak and how can a weak person inherit anything. Well, meek does not mean weak, far from it. Listed below are several definitions or examples of being meek.

Meekness
Greek word: praus mild, humble. In Strong’s Dictionary, meekness has this mindset, this attitude of exercising God’s strength under his control. Another definition, a wild stallion with a bit. A wild stallion is powerful. t’s almost impossible to tame a wild stallion. But if you work on it, you can tame a wild stallion and it becomes a powerful horse under control. So the idea of meek is you’re exercising God’s strength under his control. You’re demonstrating power without undue harshness.

It should be clear that meekness is not weakness, it is not timidity, it is not lack of conviction. Instead, it’s the gracious refusal to advance one’s own cause by force, trusting the Lord to vindicate and exalt in his time. Meekness therefore unites lowliness of self-evaluation with resolute dependence upon divine sovereignty.

Possess the Land
The promise is those who walk in meekness will possess the land. So what does possessing the land mean? Is it literal? We do not believe that obtaining land/wealth is the blessing. The blessing is you will have favor with man. The blessing is your voice will be heard, you will have influence here on earth. You can even become a world influencer. Jesus of course, was the greatest example of being a meek person who ultimately had world-wide influence.

Charlie Kirk
Since this podcast was recorded right after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Bobby and I could not help but talk about Charlie being a great example of a meek person who inherited the land by being a world-wide influencer. If you watch his multitudes of debates on campuses, he reflected meekness as he interacted with college students who opposed him, misquoted him, lied about him, mocked him. Was he direct? Absolutely, just like Jesus. Was strong on speaking the truth. Absolutely, just like Jesus. Again, meekness is not weakness. Was Charlie Kirk flawed? Absolutely, just like all of us. He acknowledged that. He pointed people to Christ. We need to take on the boldness that Charlie Kirk had to share the gospel to share biblical truth, while doing it with meekness.

Bible Verses
Philippians 2:5-9
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

Titus 3:2
To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing meekness to all men.

Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.

Righteous Anger
We ended the podcast talking about righteous anger. Because of the senseless murder of Charlie Kirk there can be much anger. We must make sure our anger is righteous anger, not worldly anger. Righteous anger finds godly solutions to evil acts. Righteous anger understands that ultimately Satan is behind evil. One of the best ways to ‘get back at evil’ is to win people to Christ.
